Iceland Day 8 - Northwest Iceland
Added: August 19, 2008
We need to travel a lot today again, there is no chance we could reach our destination Reykir soon. But there should be plenty of light as we have learned from previous days. Not to mention it is Summer solstice today.
Glaumbær and Hvítserkur
Glaumbær
Glaumbær folk museum is a highlight of this trip for Zuzka. Again a lot of old turf houses with green roofs. This time, however they are much bigger and interconnected. Now, that is one novel idea! Icelanders could spend inside whole winter without a need to clean snow and to pour salt :-)
I found I can hold 1/2 sec much better than 1/40 :-( I have many shaky photos with "sufficient" shutter speed and several 1/5 - 1/2 that are very good!
From behind they do not look like much, but that roof will last 150 years!
Not everybody has Saturday.
Hvítserkur
Our final destination Hvítserkur was not planned. We have seen it in some flyer at information centre or somewhere. Zuzka spent last 2 hours by looking into maps and everywhere to locate it. She succeeded! It is another side trip, but we are happy we did it. My longing for nice photo with photogenic rock in a sea is over :-)
Tourist guide promised also seal colony nearby, we went completely around Vatnsnes peninsula and nothing! But maybe seals prefer to celebrate Summer solstice in water.
