Carnuntum

Another visit to Austria from last year. And again to see a place known to Romans. This time, however, the place had been more important - Carnuntum has been capital of Pannonia Superior.

We visited it in October, it was cloudy and windy, enhancing atmosphere of the place :-) And giving me the chance to apply newly acquired iHDR skills to help the photos.

From the outside it does not look like much. Yet another modern museum building. But as soon as you pass it you get outside, with wonderfully reconstructed Roman buildings, most notably spa.

Why to travel to Italy to see Roman architecture when we have it just 30 minutes by car from Bratislava? Well, maybe to enjoy weather ;-) Poor Romans must felt terribly in weather we had and even worse when it started to snow....

What you can see on previous photos are complete reconstructions, whole city has been lost and dug out not long ago using traditional materials, tools and techniques. It might not be everybody's taste, but I liked it a lot.

Inside of spa building

I don't have many photos from inside, it was quite dark to take photos with old D200 without tripod and the place was crowded.

Other POIs around

There are more historical buildings directly in village Petronell-Carnuntum. I have some photos, but we did not visit them (apart from searching for one geo cache).

And couple of kilometers away there are remnants of Heidentor, triumphal arch.
