Iceland Day 3 - Landmannalaugar
Added: July 05, 2008
Landmannalaugar is geothermal and volcanic area full of unbelievable colors. It was expected to be one of highlights of our holidays in Iceland and I looked forward to it for long time. Problem is that it is rather cloudy and rain is expected.
Landmannalaugar
Landmannalaugar is only 35km from Hrauneyjar but it took us 3.5 hours to get there, well not quite there, but close enough. But it was worth of it. We have seen more and weather is worse and worse. It is terribly cold and we decided we are not going for hike there. The one I looked forward to it so much...
Frostastaðavatn
This is very nice lake next to Landmannalaugar. If weather was fair it would have beautiful blue water (I have seen photos).
It is still 2km to go
There are different types of lava here and Herman challenges us with task to find how different types were created.
While we were doing our duties huge taxi passed by. It had to be about twice as big as ours car, fitting well to this place. Unfortunately it was silent and I noticed it too late to take picture.
Iceland as it should be - lava and snow. Uhm, maybe hot lava is missing... no, it's fine as it is for now.
Landmannalaugar
Now to that crossing. River is unsatisfactory low, not like Herman described it yesterday. But at least nobody will be hurt during this "challenge". Herman pulls tall Wellington boots and showel from his car, explains how to hold showel and what to do with legs. He is not going to show us practicaly, but he insists that in case of emergency he will jump there to help. Swiss lady goes first, Zuzka 2nd and Peter last. Unfortunately nobody learned how to cross RIVER, because this was only stream.
Last thing before getting to car - Herman remembered what his lawyer told him: "You must discourage them to go, otherwise car rental company might send goons to get you" (OK, this is my fiction, but he did as was expected :-) ).We crossed 2 small streams (the 2nd was bit more fun) and we are in Landmannalaugar! A few pictures, Zuzka follows our guide to geothermally heated spring for a few minutes and then bye, bye!
Complete river crossing manual. And Peter explores "the best place to cross at".
You have it all here: lava, snow, flowers, mountains, hot spring, cold weather, wind.
